The biomechanical ultrasound research group in The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (http://ultrasound.asia) is dedicated to the development of innovative ultrasound techniques for the measurement and imaging for tissue elasticity, motion and deformity. The group has developed tissue ultrasound palpation system (TUPS) based on “ultrasound indentation” to measure soft tissue thickness and elasticity simultaneously with the force-deformation data provided. Based on solid research works and publications, TUPS now has versions for different applications, including finger-size probe, motor-driven hand-held probe, desktop probe, and probe with 2D imaging. TUPS has also been extended to noncontact and microscopic measurement for tissue elasticity using novel “water-jet and air-jet indentation” techniques. The team has also developed the most compact ultrasound elasticity imaging system for breast cancer diagnosis and B-mode image guided elasticity measurement for liver fibrosis using “vibro-ultrasound” technique. An ultrasound technique for quantitative and dynamic assessment of muscle functions, named as “sonomyography”, has been developed based on the monitoring of architectural changes of muscles during contraction. The group’s “rapid 3D ultrasound imaging” technique has been used or assessing scoliosis and other musculoskeletal tissue deformities. The group has applied their novel biomechanical ultrasound techniques for the assessment of breast, liver, spine, articular cartilage, muscle, foot plantar, skin, scar, tendon, gastric tissue, artery, heart, etc. Furthermore, the group has provided systems and software to other groups world-wide through collaborations and other arrangements. |
